There's something truly special about fall in Minnesota. The crisp air, the cozy sweaters, the scent of leaves beginning to turn, it's one of those fleeting seasons that always feels like a deep breath before winter. As a photographer, I look forward to it all year long. Every autumn, famlies come together for their annual photos, ready to update portraits, celebrate milestones, and freeze a few moments before the rush of the holidays begin.


This year, my Fall Mini Sessions at the Gustaus Aldolphus Arboretum in St. Peter, MN were once again filled with laughter, connections, and love, even if Mother Nature didn't quite deliver her usual show of fiery colors. The tree might not have been bursting in golds and reds, but the beautiful memories we created more than made up for it.

A Different Kind of Fall


If you've lived in Minnesota long enough, you know the trees usually put on a spectaculr show by early October. But this year? Nature had a slightly different plan. Between the late summer heat, an early dry spell, and afew windy days, the fall colors just didn't "pop" like we all expected.


At first, I'll admit, I felt that twing of worry every photographer gets. The Gustavus Arboretum is known for its bright canopies and gold pathways that usually serve as a natural backdrop straight out of a painting. But instead of those bold bursts of orange and scarlet, we were met with muted tones, soft greens, rustic browns, and hints of mustard yellow.


But that's the magic of photography. It isn't just about the scenery, it's about the story.


So rather than chasing color, I focused on connection. The giggles. The swept hair. The snuggles on the blanket. The kids proudly holding handfuls of crunchy leaves, even if they weren't as bright as usual. The genuine emotion between families, that's the kind of beauty that never fades.

Why I Love the Gustavus Arboretum


If you've never visite the Gustavus Adolphus College Arboretum, it's a hidden gem right in St. Peter, Minnesota. Each season brings something new, and even on years when fall color is subtle, the arboretum delivers endless natural charm.


This place is one of my favorite mini session locations for so many reasons:


  • Beautiful, soft light filters throug hthe tall trees even on cloudy days.
  • There are open fields perfect for running, snuggling, and those "walking away holding hands" shots families love.
  • The gravel paths, wooden benches, and garden beds add lovely variety without needing to move far between spots.
  • And best of all, it feels peaceful. Families can just relax and be themselves.


When clients step into the arboretum, I can almost always see the stress melt away. Kids can run free, parents can breathe, and suddenly, the idea of family photos doesn't feel stressful, it feels like a mini adventure.

The Families Who Joined Me


Every year, I'm blessed to photograph so many wonderful families during my fall mini sessions. Some I've been photographing for years, watching little ones go from newborns to running toddlers to school-age big kids with personalities that make me laugh through the whole session. Others are new faces, referred by friends or community connections, ready to start their own yearly tradition.


What I love most about mini sessions is how short and sweet they are, but still full of heart. Each family gets about fifteen minutes, just enought time for some posed shots, some candid ones, and a few in-between moments that always end up being favorites.


This year, even without the usual golden backdrop, we found magic in the smallest details:


  • A little girl spinning in her floral dress that matched her mommy and daddy's outfits.
  • Siblings making silly faces at each other, seeing who could hold in a giggle the longest.
  • An extended family making sure they created those much needed family memories with grandma and grandpa.


These ar ethe moments that make me fall in love with this job over and over again. It's not about perfection, it's about connection.

When the Colors Fade, People Shine


As the day went on, I realized that the softer the tones of this year's fall actually worked in our favor. Without the distraction of bold colors, the focus naturally fell where it should: on the people.


The muted greens and gentle browns acted almost like a studio backdrop, simple, timeless, and neutral, letting the emotion, love and laughter take center stage. The photos feel warm, cozy, and natural, with a hint of early autumn nostalgia that's perfect for holiday cards and wall galleries.


Photography is storytelling, and this year's story was all about embracing imperfection. It reminded me, and my families, that you don't need the "perfect" backdrop for beautiful images. Sometimes, the most meaningful photos happen when the environment simply fades into the background and the people shine.

Behind the Lens" What These Sessions Mean to Me


Every mini session season comes with its own little lessons. Some years I'm chasing light through vibrant yellow trees. Other years, like this one, I'm working with softer color palettes and stronger winds.


But the constant? The people who show up.


I always say that being a photographer is about more then clicking a shutter, it's about connection. It's about getting to know families, learning their stories, and being trusted to capture their love in the most genuine way. When you've been behind the camera as long as I have, you start recognizing kids's smiles from year to year, watching them grow and change, and it's such a privledge to be part of their story.


There's something so meaningful about knowing that a family's walls are lined with images we created together, not just of what they looked like, but of who they were in that season of their life.

Tips for Future Fall Mini Sessions


If you're reading this and thinking, "We need to do that next year!", here are a few quick tips for making the most out of your fall mini session:


  1. Book early. My fall mini sessions often sell out weeks (sometimes months) in advance. Once the annoucement goes out, spots disappear fast.
  2. Coordinate, don't match. Think neautral tones, cozy textures, and pops of fall color, rust, mustard, navy, cream, or olive. Avoid overly bright colors that compete with nature's tones.
  3. Arrive early. Mini sessions are quick! Arriving a few minutes before your start time helps everyone settle in and get comfortable.
  4. Embrace imperfection. Kids might get muddy. The wind might play with your hair. That's okay. Those in-between moments are often the ones you'll love the most.
  5. Trust the process. I'll guide you through the poses, prompts, and candid moments, all you need to do is relax and enjoy.

Gratitude and Looking Ahead


As I wrapped up my last session of the day, I took a moment to look around the arboretum. The light was soft, the trees whispered in the breeze, and I could still hear faint laughter from a family packing up their car. It struck me, this is why I do what I do.


Even when the colors don't pop.

Even when the weather isn't perfect.

Even when life feels chaotic.


There's always beauty to be found.
