CRAVE for FOCP

This year, I had the honor once again of donating m y time and talent to photograph CRAVE for FOCP, a culinary competition like no other in Southern Minnesota. This annual event not only showcases the incredible creativity of local chefs but also raises critical funds to fight youth hunger through FOCP's Backpack for Food Program.

What is CRAVE?

CRAVE is a one-of-a-kind culinary competition where some of the most talented chefs in Southern Minnesota are challenged to take ingredients straight from an FOCP food pack and transform them into unforgettable, delectable tastings. Instead of gourmet pantry staples, the chefs work with items like:

  • Easy Mac
  • Banana Chips
  • Applesauce Cups
  • Pretzel Goldfish
  • Granola Bars
  • And other snack-pack favorites

What might look like simple children's lunchbox items to most of us become the foundation for culinary masterpieces in the hands of these creative chefs. Guests not only got to enjoy the results but also experienced firsthand how food insecurity can be met with imagination, skill, and compassion.

Why CRAVE Matters

At its heart, CRAVE is more than a competition, it's about community. Kids can't thrive on an empty stomach, and food insecurity prevents youth from reaching their full potential. FOCP works tirelessly to change that. Through five food programs, FOCP provides meals on weekends and extended breaks to over 1,200 K-12 youth in seven school districts.

Events like CRAVE provide critical funding for these programs, expecially as the school year begins. Every ticket purchased and every dish served helps ensure that local children have access to nutritious meals when they need them most.

The Creativity of our Local Chefs

I was blown away by the recipes chefs created from such humble ingredients. Some of the crown favorites included:

  • Green Bean En Croute with the main ingredient being Green Beans
  • C.R.E.A.M. (Craisins Rule Everything Around Me) which was a craisin turnover, and the main ingredient, craisins
  • Tuna Tapas with the main ingredient being tuna from a pouch

Each plate was proof of the chefs' incredible ability to turn everyday food pack items into dishes worthy of a fine-dining table.

Donating My Time and Talent

Being a part of CRAVE was an honor. I donated my photography services to help capture the spirit of the evening, the chefs at work, the joy of the guests, and the energy of a community coming together for such an important cause. My camera became a way to tell the story of FOCP's mission, the talent of our local chefs, and the generosity of everyone who supported the event.

A Community United

What struck me most about CRAVE was the sense of community. This wasn't just about food, it was about hope. It was about giving children the chance to learn, grow, and thrive without the burden of hunger holding them back.

I left the event feeling inspired, grategul, and reminded why giving back matters so deeply. CRAVE for FOCP is proof that when we combine creativity, talent, and compassion, we can change lives, one meal at a time.
